I assume you have a 12volt battery that you are using just for cranking and starting purposes. Are you by-passing the ignition switch? If so, you should have a wire from the + side of your battery, to the small + terminal on your coil, and a wire from the - terminal of your coil to your distributor. I would hook this up, take off the distributor cap, and watch for spark at the points.
