Well, it gets a little bit confusing when talking about Canadian GMCs. In the states GMC went from a 6 volt positive ground to 12 volt negative ground in 1956. Earlier models were 6 volt positive ground, while chevy trucks were 6 volt negative ground. GMC also put different engines in the Canadian trucks. Most likely the 49 would have a 216 chevy engine from the factory, not the 228 GMC motor that was standard in the states.
