I just sold the 261 (yes, 261) engine & cast iron HydraMatic tranny out of my 1st Edition 55. It had the Offy intake with dual Carter Webers, and slpit Fenton exhaust.
The combiantino worked pretty well, BUT we did not get actual wide open throttle when we floored the pedal, as the combination of 3-D geomtery for the throttle linkage,plus the need to synchronize the control lever to the tranny, is a bit tricky.
My pro mechanic freind Randy was confident he could do it, but it was pointless to spend the time since we knew I was selling the drivetrain within weeks.
It ran and sounded wonderful, and got lots of comments from anyone who knew AD trucks.
