a newer axle
the newer axles have much better brakes, allows you dozens of choices for trannys, open drive line and better freeway speeds.
b4 you buy an axle... consider:
what engine you will use.
what transmission ??
ratios ??
locate a transmission calculator to determine what axle ratio. works for your type of driving ??
engine mods ??
5 or 6 lugs ??
how much work do you want to do??
downtime spent on re-build??
do searches on this subject as it has been discussed many times over.

have better brakes in the rear. some day
you might get some more speed out of your new engine.
as you can see once you open a can of worms...
lots to think about.
I still have my stock front end but now sport disc brakes and a better brake system. this ALL takes time.
these are a tip of an iceberg on the subject..........
mid 70's 10 or 12 bolt axles work as do dozens of others
happy hunting... and good luck.
