There should be a square pipe plug about half way up on the passenger side of the tranny. Remove that plug and fill with 90w gear lube until it starts running out of the plug hole. In stall plug and your done. That will tell you that the tranny is full of lube. The noise is probably normal for that old of truck. This might make the transmission a little more quiet also.
