Varnishing by itself generally lasts only a few months in the sun. We have had a little better luck with some two stage coating systems in our tests http://www.mar-k.com/wood_finish_testing_ii.html, but they have only been exposed for about 6 months. We used an epoxy from RAKA http://www.raka.com/ as a sealer/primer on some of our test samples. They are knowledgeable about using clear finishes on boats. How close are you to Ft. Pierce where they are located? Maybe they can suggest the best natural finish for your location and climate.
