The bypass valve is needed to allow oil to bypass the oil filter due to ecxcessive restriction such as cold oil. If you don't have a bypass valve you risk the inner tube of the filter collapsing and flushing filter media through your engine. The best is to use the ford/chrysler type of filter. The only gm style filter (that I know of) which incorporates both a bypass valve and the antidrain back valve is the NAPA 1072. The 1072 was designed for wisconcin engines and probably not readily available.
