Just a little tip that may help. If you have an old valve cover around that you don't care about, cut a whole large enough over each adjuster so a socket will fit through and put it on with a gasket for adjusting. Keeps most of the oil from spattering up your inner fenders and fire wall. The system you described is the one I use, but check your manual for proper back off turns. Could be anywhere from 1/2 to one full turn. Varies with engines. 3/4 is what I see most.
