Jerry, sounds like you did fine. I spent close to an hour yesterday trouble shooting a low / intermittant voltage only to find that my meter test leads were intermittant! They are test lead hell now! Just be glad you didn't pull the pan, put a new oil pump in, get 'er all buttoned back up again only to start it and have the same stinking noise! Good catch on the alternator.
