My recomendation is to go to HomeDepot and get some phosphoric acid metal prep from the paint department. It works well at removing rust and is not quite as caustic as the other. You still need to use the standard protection when using acids. Phosphoric acid is more steel friendly than Muriatic acid. Muriatic causes hydrogen embrittelment, phosphoric applies a phosphate coating.
