i put a new rubber seal in my 50 and it definitely was thicker than the the original, but i loosened the nuts on the lever/door connection, pushed the door shut and retightened the nuts once the door was as flush as i could get it.
it is not absolutely flush with the body but it is pretty close and is at least the even all the way around.
the foam compresses better but it does not seem to seal as well as the rubber does (if you can get a uniform contact around the entire perimeter).
