I spoke to a friend today who's been in the hot rod parts business for decades and he says the "Smithy's" are the original, not knock-offs. He showed one he has hanging on his display rack. Have they changed from metal packing to glass over the years? Possibly but according to him they have always been spelled Smithy's and pronounced Smitties.
