The square hole in my speedo had rounded and the square end of the cable would slip, catch up and slip again. It was wild.

I enlarged the square cable end a bit with some epoxy and a file. I then made sure I didn't did screw it into the speedo too tightly. That can cause problems. It's now perfectly smooth.
