Since this "old codger" was around when these trucks were new I remember one other use for the passenger side locks. Unless you lived in a larger city the streets weren't paved, at least in the midwest, and with the lock on the sidewalk side you didn't have to slog around through the mud or the slush to get in the cab. Nice if you had on your "saturday night to town good shoes".
