Have some of the replies been pulled again? Because, I'm having a hard time following this thread and it is beginning to not make sense to me. We were talking about the original interior color for a 1951 - 3100, where did "baking ovens", "Rose Tan" and “hammer tone” enter into the picture???
There have been reams of discussion posted here on the AD interior colors. And the conclusion that I am coming to is that everyone has a favorite name for the interior color. I just finished a couple of weeks worth of searching the archives for "Interior Colors" and from what I found, Bob Adler has had the most exposure to, and done the most research on the actual interior colors, so from my point of view, what he says is the gospel.
The original paint companies that GM used have gone under, been bought out, changed management, etc., and apparently destroyed or lost the original formulas. So these cannot be cross-referenced by the paint companies that are in business now. It seems that the closest match has been acquired by finding interiors that have the original color, that are in excellent condition, that have been garaged and are not faded. Then scanning the color and letting the computer come up with a modern day formula from PPG or other paint sources. Obviously after fifty or sixty years any paint, no matter how well it is protected, will have changed hue slightly. In other words, unless you had the original formula, an exact match to the original color would be impossible to come up with. The same situation goes for the engine colors, a best guess match is the most we can hope for.
This problem becomes quite evident by the paints that are being marketed by the dozens of vendors that sell AD parts. Take any 10 vendors and compare what they claim to be, the “closest match to original” engine and interior paints and you will get 10 different colors!
Now, this is just what I have observed over the past fall, I am very new at the restoration of an AD truck and would welcome any advice or additional information to what I have learned to this point.
