My brother uses whats called Battery Tender. Its a compact unit that won't get in the way of anything. It is current sensing, meaning it turns itself on only when it detects voltage drop in the battery, and shuts of when proper voltage is achieved. Works great. I know motorcuycle shops carry them, I'm not sure of the parts houses.
