I have done a lot of tires with split rings when I was a kid working in a gas station. We always used a clip on air chuck and put the ring down, under the lube rack hoist. Had one come loose but the hoist held it down and there was no damage. I always steer clear of them now, they are lethal if they come off under pressure.
