Here is some information dealing with split rims.They explain what to look for and what precautions should be used.The first link is a picture of a smaller type of tire cage"look for the tire cage link".The bars prevent the ring from hitting you,if it should pop off while inflating the tire.A lot of people have died from the rings hitting them.I had a neighbor years ago.He was changing the tires on a big rig that had split rims.The ring came off and tore half his face off.He amazingly lived and had lots of plastic surgery to over come his misfortune.Be careful,if you chosse to do it yourself.See the links below.
