This is a very real danger. A friend of mine was killed by a car tire exploding as he inflated it. Since then I use a clip on inflater valve and attach it with zero pressure. Then walk over to the compressor and turn the air on.

In lieu of a tire cage, you can wrap a heavy chain around the tire, looped through the center of the wheel, several times. Even with this, don't be near it while it's inflating.
