The holes that you are refering to are most likely for the wiring harness/choke/throttle cables. The heater would be on the right side.
I would suggest that you get a shop manual and possibly an assembly manual. Oh, and a copy of "How To Restore Your Chevy Truck". You will find these to be very informative to how things should go together.
