The best thing to remove a pilot bushing with is Grease. Yep you got it. You will need a piece of rod about the same diameter as the input shaft. Steel, alum, brass all will do as long as it is a close fit in the pilot bushing. Then fill the pilot bushing with grease, as much as will go into the hole. Put the rod you have selected in the pilot bushing. there should be resistance and hit it with the hammer. The hydraulic pressure is like a piston in a brake caliper. It usually pops the bushing out. I usually get a clutch pack for fairly late model stuff, it comes with the clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and pilot bushing.
