i drove a chevy oil truck in the early 70's that had some kind of power stearing cyl mounted on the straight axil. factory i think.
But my 2 cents, you will not efect the handling with a rack mounted to the solid axil.
your problem will be to get the steering wheel conected to the rack.
"i saw it on the web" some one some where makes a unit that has a gear and chain drive to get the alignment. it mounts on the fire wall and puts a shaft be low the headers and stuff.
