Us oldtimers refered to the lower numerical ratio, the 2.73-1 in your example, as a high geared rear end. Hi-speed rear end is the same thing, but creates less confusion due to the fact that younger people think of numerical values when talking about ratios; just the opposite of the oldtimers thinking. I usually state "higher geared (numercally lower)" to indicate my meaning.
