To prevent them, you only need to replace the door stays. Most vendors carry them. To repair them, usually depends on how bad they are. I've welded pins onto the low side of the dent and work them back out with a slide hammer. If they aren't very bad, you can work them out from the inside with an old ax handle or something of the like.
