sounds like bushing are worn on linkage.Some guys use too flip the levers on the tranny to change the shifting pattern.This made 1st where revers was,2nd to 1st and 3th to 2nd and reverse to 3th gear on the shift pattern.This was for the (power) shifting.ho ho.I have a Hurst sincro lock set up on a 55 junker on the back 40.On your shifter adj it . Just put the shifter in nutral,slid a round screw driver thru the shifter under the truck.Look close you'll see a hole. this lines everthing up in neutral.This locks the shifter.Then adjust linkage arms with tranny in neutral also.
