Likely, it's a Saginaw 3 speed. Look for 7 bolts holding the side cover on. There will be two shift levers on the side cover too.
Even if the transmission were brand new, worn shift linkage will cause all the issues you're describing.
You can still get all the bushings to rebuild the shift linkage at the dealer parts department.
Do that before worrying about the transmission.
