I've seen several short-wheel base trucks with 8-lug hubs, and my assumption is that someone swapped axles to get the tougher stuff. They have all been four-wheel-drive.

I don't know why you couldn't swap the 3/4-ton IFS and floater rear under a 1/2-ton frame. I'd bet the IFS would be nearly bolt on, and you could go to a '72 - '87 with disk brakes in the process.

I have a '72 3/4-ton frame with front suspension sitting in the yard. If you want I can take a picture or two of it for you. Rear suspension is gone.
