Hi, In the old days of no on-board computer, we would ground the field to see if the generator is producing a charge. If so, we'd replace (or adjust) the regulator. If the engine runs with the battery cable off and the field terminal grounded, the generator is working.
Did you try polorizing the voltage regulator? Battery to generator? Yeah, you tried that.
