Stuart. We put flax bales over out cistern to keep it from freezing in the winter. It can get to about 50 below here (with wind chill), and that is not the type of weather to be going down into the cistern to break open ice and water. We also use them on our septic tank to keep it from freezing, and around the dogs house to keep the wind and snow out of his house.
