I have a theory about this. When you live in a city- or anywhere that is densly populated- there is not much appreciation for other people. They're just in your way. The irony is that though you're surrounded by more people, you probably know fewer of them.
I've heard that if you throw enough rats into a cage together, they start to eat eachother.
