there is always a reason why metal cracks and it is usually a combination of corrosion and stress. If there is enough corrosion, the metal cannot perform it's job and failure results. Even though it may not look like it, the crack is evidence that the hanger is in failure mode. As far as replacing it goes, it should not be a problem to find a good used one.
