That little thing in history known as World War 2. They were building so many of everything they started doing away with anything that added more steps to the production processes.

For instance, the Jeeps that Ford was making, at first they had Ford stamped on certain parts... but it was addin' steps to the production process, thus slowing up things, so they did away with it. It was actually Ford that came up with the stamped grill of the Jeep that everyone knows and loves - the original grill was a wire grate unit.

So... lots of things made during that time period were made simple and to the point.
