As with anything these days, honesty is the way to go should anyone want to reset their odometer. I certainly plan to do it to mine when I restore my 1964 C60.
But let's think about this for a minute. If you document the actual odometer with a photo prior to resetting and have that available during registration or selling, who can argue with you. Merely mention that the vehicle was restored and part of that process was to restore the instrument panel. I'm sure with proper documentation it would be no big deal. Also, if someone were to purchase your vehicle that individual would probably be like us 'Bolters and appreciate that level of detail.
And, if the worst happens and one were to get a hard time at the DMV...then the country is in worse shape than I thought for worrying about the odometer reading on a 40+ year old vehicle
