There are several different filter sizes for the various brand/years of canister-style filters. Try a "search" in this forum for "oil filter" or "canister".

The Fram canisters did not drain back into the block (at least that is the case for some, if not all Fram canisters). To clean out the oil and sludge in the bottom of these Fram canisters, Fram sold a siphon pump, "The Sludge Siphon". These are seen on eBay every so often.
