About 6 years ago I was working at a state hospital. My boss and I were chatting about trucks. When he discovered I was queer for old trucks, he insisted I follow him home that night.

He lived about 20 miles from town. After he showed me the dinning room floor he want me to help him replace, he led me deep out into the country to an old homestead. It was at the end of a dirt road near Deville, Louisiana.

All you could see from the road was a gap in two fence posts where there had been a driveway. We got out and walked thru head high weeds up to an old wooden outbuilding. It was leaning over hard to the right. He pointed at the weeds to our left and said the house was there. I couldn't see no house, but took his word for it.

We had to crawl under the door to the old shop/garage to get inside. It was one of those tilt up doors and it had tilted up when the building began to lean, so it was partly open.

There inside was a forest green 56 chevy truck. Short bed, step side. It was covered in dust. It had 1500 and some-odd miles on the odometer. The tires were flat and the bed full of junk. I couldn't walk all the way around it for all the junk in there, but I could tell is was cherry.

Once we got back in the daylight he explained how it got there.

The owner had bought it new and built the shed it was in cause it was his first new truck. He was fairly old when he bought it. He died that same year and left a widow and one grown son who was in jail. The widow was still alive but in a nursing home.

He claimed the son had been trying for years to get hold of the truck, so his mom burned the title, that she hated him for going to jail and leaving her in a nursing home all those years.

I was going thru a divorce and couldn't afford food much less old trucks at the time. Then I found a better job and moved on. The boss has retired on disability I hear.

I think it's time I called him to see what happened to that old truck.

His name is Ricky Paul. He lives in Deville Louisiana on Paul road. I'll have to look up his phone number just like you would.

If you get ahold of him first and get ahold of that truck before me, then you win.

I'm thinking, the way things are down here, and the way these folks are down here, that truck is still there.

A good friend will bail you outta jail...A true friend will be sitting next to you saying, "That was FUN!"
