First, make sure you have the correct thickness of soapstone impregnated filler (I have received three thickness from different vendors - the vent window channel and side window channel used different thicknesses). Also, the thickness of the glass panes might be different from orinials. Because of this, the "dry fit" of the glass and filler in the channel should be fairly tight or the pane will slide loose, even after applying the oil.
As you describe, the Shop Manual instructions say to add the oil (mineral oil or engine oil should both be OK) after the pieces are in place. The oil wicks into the soapstone filler and will tighten the joint.
