Stay as close to manufacturer recomendation as possible. I also have a Honda that calls for 30w. But, I have an early 80's chevy 4 speed that calls for Dextron 2 ATF. It has a bunch of miles (over 150,000) and no visible wear inside.
There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it can not be overcome by brute force and ignorance.
