A story that might have some bearing on the coil mounting position. Driving my Model A pickup thru Kansas back in the late 60's we encountered a downpour and it shorted out the coil (the hood hinge in the center isn't waterproof.) I got out, was soaked to my underwear immediately, threw a tarp over the hood and dried things up. Restarted and drove to an underpass to wait out the storm. Older Chevy trucks share the same center hinged hood. So maybe that was a carryover. The AD hoods also have a joint in the center of the hood that isn't totally waterproof as well.
