I did a Google search on exploding coils. In one example the gentlemen had rented a small wood frame house with a garage with white painted walls. He had a T bucket roadster, with 12 volt ignition. He turned on the inside garage lite one morning and saw thousands of small black spots adorning the walls and ceiling; they were everywhere and were stuck like dots of black glue. Further inspection revealed the top of the coil had exploded.
I found several other posts that had the same experience with coils that exploded, leaving those same glue like black dots everywhere.
So my first thought on the coil facing down, was that it would minimize the cleanup if the coil did explode. My second thought, “Not Likely”. Must be another reason!
