Glen - It's hard to tell from your pictures which filter element your pump has. From your second post, it sounds like yours has the "screen" type filter instead of the replaceable paper element.
If it is the screen type, yes to wiggling it till it comes off. Then it will need to be cleaned to restore filter function and flow.
