Finally found some discussion on the web about what I called a "nail tooth". HERE's an article from the Tool Shed site. The first picture in the article shows what I was referring to. Apparently your Disstons, John, aren't as old as the ones I've seen in Dad's garage that I know are at least 70 years old.

[on edit] I really doubt the contention that Disston claim that it's merely ornamentation.
