I can answer that last question. Sadly there is no fix for that plastic ring. It won't fail all at once, but it is going to fail. Two reasons: One, the magnets in it are very weak. They have to be or the simple little Hall Effect sensor won't cycle as it should. Hopefully you understand that is all this thing ever was...magnets separated by slots and a Hall Effect sensor. Two, magnets lose magnetism when they're heated and these are in a hot environment. Heat causes disorganization in the magnetic domains and if the Curie temp is reached the magnet may be toast forever. Depends entirely on what the magnet is made of.
