I also graduated from a technical high school and took Machine Shop. Luckly, I did not learn the hard way to NOT EVER, leave any kind of loose items in or on a chuck.
Like Kevin, the instructor did a good job stressing that point. Gloves and any rings are also a big no-no along with loose jewelry, hair and clothes.
