I just ordered a 1 1/4 inch diameter chucking reamer, with the idea of converting stovebolt balancers to a snug slip fit instead of a press fit, and using a 7/16-20 bolt to hold it in place. Since drill bits don't make perfectly round holes, the reamer should open up the balancer bore just enough to eliminate the need to drive or press the balancer on, and also make it possible to tinker with camshaft timing by using an offset woodruff key on the crankshaft timing gear. I'm also considering doing a similar conversion on the cam gear, to allow fine-tuning the cam timing the same way during dyno runs. A one degree change in the crankshaft gear position alters cam timing two degrees, while the cam position only changes half that much when an offset key is used. Advanced cam timing builds more low end torque- - - -retarding the cam improves top end horsepower.
