Way back in the dark ages Perfect Circle sold a bench top machine called a "Nurlizer" for shops without a lathe so pistons could be expanded back to standard skirt clearance. Back in the days when engines got 2-3 ring jobs between rebores, it was standard practice to knurl the skirts to compensate for wear. Average life of rings was only 30-40K miles on some engines.
