For the valve cover with the 2 bolt mounting, you can do like Carl says or just put a thin layer on the back side & & corners of the head.
For the side cover or any gasket that you want to keep in place till it is mounted use trim cement to hold it to the cover & let it dry good.
Put a thick layer of rtv on the other side of the gasket at the bottom & lower corners. Put a small amount of rtv on the coil mount bolts as they go into the head & oil can seep through.
