As I think about it more, I recall having a hard time figuring out the correct way to hook it up.

The way mine is plumbed, when it is not activated, it connects the inlet and outlet so it forms a loopback to the engine and isolates the heater core.

Could you have it backwards so that the loopback is on the heater core side and you are dead-heading the engine side? That would cause significantly higher pressures on its inlet side and could be blowing them out.
