Nathan, It appears there are no pics for folks to see??? Can't answer question 1 without seeing what you're asking about. For question 2 - YES, you can use the brake shoe coil style hold down springs and retaining caps in place of the bent in half metal spring clips. Just did that all the way around on my '51 3100 during recent brake overhaul.
