Early VWs didn't even have a gas gauge- - - - -just a "reserve" section in the tank accessed by turning a handle on the floorboard. I think it held a half gallon or so- - - - -enough to drive about 15 miles at the bug's normal 30 MPG. My Harley has the same setup.
