The steering column is grounded, so if any of those wires touch it, you will have a short.
Edit: Without the blinker switch in the column, you won't have brake lights because they pass through that switch even when the turn signals are not activated. I only mention that now because you mentioned some concern with the lack of brake lights earlier.
